Coffee lovers have reasons to rejoice as a new study suggests that their daily coffee habit, whether with or without a little sugar, is linked to a decreased risk of premature death. This large-scale Chinese study further supports existing evidence indicating that coffee consumption is associated with a lower risk of early mortality when compared to abstaining from coffee. However, what sets this study apart is that it also explores the impact of adding sugar to one's coffee.
The results revealed that individuals who regularly consumed unsweetened coffee had a 16 to 21 per cent lower likelihood of dying during a seven-year follow-up period compared to those who didn't drink coffee at all. Even those who enjoyed 1.5 to 3.5 cups of coffee per day with added sugar experienced a 29 to 31 per cent reduced risk of mortality compared to non-coffee drinkers.
Nonetheless, the outcomes were less conclusive for individuals who sweetened their coffee with artificial sweeteners. The researchers observed that those who preferred sugar-sweetened coffee typically added only about one teaspoon of sugar, and they suggest that the effects may differ for individuals who use more sugar.

It is important to note that this study is observational and establishes correlation rather than causation. While the researchers made adjustments for various factors like diet, socioeconomic status, and lifestyle, accurately measuring all differences can be challenging.
